Pay-Less Markets, Inc. Executive Vice President Kathy C. Sgro presented a check for $3,023.00 to University of Guam President Robert Underwood and UOG Endowment Foundation Executive Director Mark Mendiola on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Mangilao Pay-Less store location. Pay-Less Markets was the Triton Business Partners for the month of November, where $1.00 for every whole turkey sold at all Pay-Less Markets stores were pledged to support the University of Guam’s 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign.

Sgro, President Robert A. Underwood, and Doris De Guzman (Mangilao Pay-Less Store Manager)

“Pay-Less Markets is pleased to donate $3,023.00 from the sales of turkeys throughout the month of November,” said Mrs. Sgro.

“We thank Pay-Less for not only enhancing the holiday spirit but for giving us a Christmas gift as well,” said President Underwood.

Pay-Less Markets distributes whole turkey brand names such as Butterball, Norbest, and Zacky Farms. Everyone who purchased a whole turkey at any Pay-Less Markets store during November had automatically supported the facilities improvements in UOG’s Physical Master Plan. Customers did not need to bring in a coupon, and they did not need to mention UOG or UOG’s 60th Anniversary.

“We support higher education in our community, especially since one of our stores is in the MEEZ or Mangilao Education Economic Zone,” said Mrs. Sgro.

Pay-Less Markets was established in Guam in 1950 and has grown to seven locations in Agana Shopping Center, Dededo, Mangilao, Micronesia Mall, Oka, Sinajana, and Yigo. For more company information, please visit www.paylessmarkets.com.

The UOG Endowment Foundation unveiled a large “giving tree” and banner wall and presented gifts to donors of the University of Guam 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign at their appreciation event at the UOG Field House on the evening of Wednesday, November 28. The evening began with the unveiling of a large 28 feet x 8 feet framed donor wall at the main entrance of the Field House, across from the box office ticket windows. The donor wall consists of two Tronkon Nunu (banyan) trees where the names of the campaign’s “60-Hour Club” members and “21st-Century Visionaries and Leaders” are engraved on brass leaves. The donor wall’s background consists of the painting “Spanish Bridge” by local artist and UOG Professor, Ric Castro. As the night continued inside the Field House, guests were entertained by a jazz band and the University Singers, presented with their unique appreciation gifts, and donors at the $100,000.00 and above giving level were honored with their corporate logo banners displayed high above on one of the interior walls. The spectacular decorations and delicious food made the event a night to remember.

Jerry Tan, President of Tan Holdings, and George Chiu, Executive Vice President of Tan Holdings, committed $1,000,000.00 on behalf of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation to UOG’s 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign today at 10:00 a.m., in the Atrium of the Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration Building. This donation marks the first-ever $1 million donation to UOG’s Capital Campaign. UOG President Robert A. Underwood, UOG Endowment Foundation Board Members and Executive Director Mark Mendiola accepted Tan Siu Lin Foundation’s donation on behalf of the University community.

From left to right: UOG Endowment Foundation Board Members Jesse Leon Guerrero and Dr. Wilfred Leon Guerrero, UOG Endowment Foundation Board Chairman David John, George Chiu, Jerry Tan, President Robert Underwood, UOG Endowment Foundation Board Members Joseph F. Ada and Dr. Saied Safabakhsh, and Mark Mendiola

“Our family is very happy to be a part of UOG’s 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign,” Mr. Tan said. “It is important that UOG continues to modernize the campus and expand with additional buildings, which would allow our students and faculty members to have a better environment and higher education.”

“The donation by the Tan Siu Lin Foundation represents the latest chapter in the strong relationship between education, business success and reinvesting in the community,” President Underwood said. “Five of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Tan are graduates from the University of Guam over the course of the past three decades. They have seen fit to reinvest in the opportunities that the University represented to them for future generations.”

“The Tan Family business originated in Guam, and it’s always a great story when you have a local family able to accomplish so much from their humble beginning,” said Mr. Chiu. “The University of Guam played a major role in the education of the Tan Family and being able to contribute back to the University is a small gesture compared to the benefits that the family has received attending not just the University but growing up on Guam.”

“We are excited to support UOG as the students will become our future workforce,” Mr. Tan said.

As part of the momentous occasion, the donors and audience of faculty, staff and students were serenaded by the University Singers who performed two songs from their upcoming show called “Music on Guam 1952 – The Year UOG Began,” which will take place on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the UOG Fine Arts Theater.

Through their donation, the Tan Siu Lin Foundation will be acknowledged as a “21st-Century Visionary” in the Triton Developers program, a fundraising strategy designed to attract different levels of support which can be spread over five years of the capital campaign.

“The key to economic success is a vibrant local workforce and the University of Guam is one of the keys to help build such a workforce that will ensure that Guam remains a wonderful place to live and raise a family similar to what Dr. Tan Siu Lin did 40 years ago,” said Mr. Chiu.

“This is generosity for the sake of the future, and we are happy that they have selected us as the beneficiaries,” President Underwood said.
